Cosmic Fox is the brainchild of Valerie Champion, a long-time punk and alternative rock bass player and vocalist based in San Antonio, TX. Fujoshi is a Japanese word that translates literally to “rotten woman” and is often used as a derogatory term for women who enjoy dirty boy’s love comics. The songs on this EP reflect the literal meaning of fujoshi – a rotten, twisted woman with no self esteem fights back against a society whose apathy grinds down the populace, singing and screaming into the void with some hope of moving forward.
Fujoshi draws influence from sludge, thrash, punk and heavy rock and roll. The first five songs were written for previous bands, but were never used or never recorded. This is Valerie’s first solo recording effort, and the songwriting reflects a more youthful, highly depressed period of the artist’s life. The last track is a cover of a song by Alice in Chains, a band that has greatly influenced Valerie’s propensity for writing heavy songs that utilize soaring vocal harmonies.
Recommended for fans of Hole, the Breeders, early Hüsker Dü, Alice in Chains, Veruca Salt, and Shonen Knife.
